Document Merge - Call Rejected by Callee

If you encounter the error message 'Call Rejected by Callee' when trying to merge a document in, it indicates that Word is unable to open properly to complete the merge. This article provides steps to attempt to resolve this issue.

Possible Solutions

Solution 1: Ensure No Stuck Word Executables are Running

Sometimes, Word processes running in the background can interfere with new operations. Follow these steps to check and terminate any stuck processes:

  1. Open Task Manager:

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

    • Alternatively, you can right-click the taskbar and select "Task Manager."

  2. End Stuck Word Processes:

    • In the Processes tab, look for any instances of WINWORD.EXE.

    • Select each WINWORD.EXE process and click End Task.

  3. Restart Merge:

    • Close Task Manager

    • Attempt to merge the document again.

Solution 2: Set Word as the Default Program for the File Type

Ensure that Microsoft Word is set as the default application for the file type you are trying to merge. This step ensures that Word opens correctly when merging documents.

  1. Open Default Apps Settings:

    • Press Windows + I to open Settings.

    • Navigate to Apps > Default apps.

  2. Set Default by File Type:

    • Scroll down and click on Choose default apps by file type.

    • Find the file extension of the document you are trying to merge (e.g., .doc, .rtf).

    • Ensure Microsoft Word is selected as the default application for this file type.

  3. Attempt the Merge Again:

    • After setting Word as the default app, try to merge the document again.

Solution 3: Run a Full Online Office Repair

If the above solutions do not resolve the issue, running a full online repair of your Office installation can fix corrupted files and settings.

  1. Open Control Panel:

    • Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter to open Control Panel.

  2. Access Programs and Features:

    • Click on Programs > Programs and Features.

  3. Repair Microsoft Office:

    • Find and select your Microsoft Office installation in the list.

    • Click Change at the top, then select Online Repair and click Repair.

  4. Follow the Prompts:

    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.

  5. Restart Your Computer:

    • After the repair is complete, restart your computer.

    • Attempt to merge the document again.
