Stopping Postgres

On your Prevail Server PC we will first need to stop the database engine from running.  To do so you’ll need to browse out to Services by opening a run command box (CTRL + R) and typing ‘Services.msc’. Click browse and locate ‘postgresql-x64-12 - PostgreSQL Server 12’ in the list that opens.

Select stop and once the Status is blank or ‘stopped’ you are ready to Proceed.

Moving Data

You will now need to locate the Prevail_Server and PostGresDB12 folders on your Prevail Server PC. These folders can be in separate locations however they are traditionally located in the same directory. Copy/Cut/Move theses folders to your new server. This may take some time. Once the Prevail_server folder has been fully copied over please share that folder with all users with Read/Write permissions.

Installing Database

Once both folders have been moved to the new server in their respective locations, we will now need to install the database engine PostGreSQL on the new server. To do this please contact Prevail Tech Support at the following number, 866-998-4400. Keep in mind that you may need to wait for a tech to perform the install. If you wish to setup a time before hand, please call the support number to schedule. We are open 9 to 5 ET, Monday to Friday.

Clean up

After speaking to a tech, you should be up and running on your new server. Once everything is confirmed running and stable on the new server you may uninstall PostGreSQL on the old server and remove any data that was left. If you wish to keep the data just in case, please rename both Preavil_Server and PostgresDB12 folders to indicate that they are Old or not in use. This will save us from any confusion in the future.

Point Clients to New Server

Once the data is moved and database engine is installed you will need to point the workstations to the new server. To do this open the Registry Editor by opening a run command box (CTRL + R) and typing ‘Regedit’. Brose out to the key

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PrevailSettings\Database

The key ‘Server’ will need to be updated with the new hostname of the server. Once changed Prevail should connect.

If you have also changed to new Workstations, you will just need to install the client by browsing out to the Prevail_server folder share from the new server and running ‘clientsetup.exe’
