Prevail 10 E-Training*: Dashboard Designer

A Dashboard is simply a chart or graph of certain elements of your data, displayed in the format you define. The Dashboard Designer allows applicable administrators to create dashboards which helps your firm track data throughout the system.

Unlike reports, Prevail dashboards are interactive with the data and have drill-down capability all the way down to the individual data elements. When you click on the Dashboard button, you’ll be able to configure how you want to view the dashboards you’ve been given access to see. For more information on running dashboards, see ‘Prevail 10 E-Training*: Implementing Dashboards.'

Instructions

Part 1: Setting Up your Dashboard

Before you begin, you will need to set up your dashboard according to the templates provided.

  1. Administration>Dashboard Designer

  2. Clone a dashboard by clicking on it once, and then clicking the 'Clone' button at the top or double-click on a dashboard to open it for editing.

    1. Note: You cannot edit a locked dashboard -- i.e., a dashboard with the padlock icon next to it. If you double-click a locked dashboard, it will automatically clone it.

Part 2: Building your Dashboard

When you clone or edit a dashboard, you will see three panels: Settings, Dashboard Data, and Dashboard Preview.

Settings Panel

  1. Subject: The name of your dashboard

  2. Shared: Who can view the dashboard

  3. Description: A description of the dashboard. Include any notes about the dashboard you would like.

  4. Dashboard Type:

    1. Pie

    2. Area

    3. Column

    4. Bar

    5. Line

    6. Note: If you select Area, Column, or Bar, you will then choose Stacked or Non-Stacked by checking (or not checking) the "Stacked" box.

Matter Settings:

Note: Matter Settings only appear when using the attached parties, prospects/intakes, matters, and process step dashboards.

Select whether you want to include open or closed matters (or both), clients or prospects (or both), and a specific law type (or all law types) for the data included in the dashboard. These settings act as filters for the dashboard’s data before it is displayed in the preview.

Open/Closed

Choose whether the dashboard should include:

  • Open Only (only open matters)

  • Closed Only (only closed matters)

  • Open & Closed (both)

Client/Prospect

Choose whether the dashboard should include:

  • Clients Only

  • Prospects Only

  • Clients & Prospects (both)

Law Type

Choose a specific law type to limit the dashboard to that law type, or select All Law Types to include everything.

Date Range Filter

Note: This section only applies when the Active box is checked.

Active checkbox: Check if you want to filter the data to include only a certain date range. Leave the “Active” box checked and then choose which “Date Field” you want to filter by. When Active is unchecked, the dashboard will include all dates and the Date Field/Date Selection choices will not be used.

Series Field: What each section represents (a slice of a pie chart or the Y-axis of a bar, column, or area dashboard).

Example: In the “Open Matters by Lead Attorney” dashboard, the Series Field is Matters → Lead Attorney, since each portion, bar, or line represents a different Lead Attorney.

Range Field: The date field that you want to measure by. This is the X-axis in a bar, column, or area dashboard. The frequency is the increment used for the range date.

Series Options

These fields control how the dashboard groups and displays the data.

Series Field: What each section represents (slice of a pie chart, or the Y-axis grouping of a bar/column/area dashboard).

Example: In the ‘Open Matters by Lead Attorney’ dashboard: Series Field = Matters, Lead Attorney, since each portion/bar/line represents a different Lead Attorney.

Metric: What is being calculated for each Series Field value (example: Count). This controls the value shown for each slice/bar/point.

Range Fields

Range Field: The date field you want to measure by. It is the X-axis in a bar/column/area dashboard.

Frequency: The increment to be used for the Range Field (example: Day, Week, Month, Year).

Dashboard Data Panel- The pool of data that your dashboard will draw from.

  1. Displays in a grid format that follows the same rules as every other grid in Prevail.

  2. You can filter this data to create extremely focused dashboards.

  3. Example: This dashboard is displaying all open matters by Lead Attorney. To create an attorney specific Dashboard, scroll to the Lead Attorney Field, then apply the appropriate filter. You can apply multiple filters simultaneously.
  4. Dashboard Preview: Shows a preview of the work you do in the Settings and Data panels.

  5. Click 'Save' at the top left to save your changes to your new or edited dashboard.
